Oxford

Shine Oxford meets on the first Saturday of every month, at different locations around Oxford. Sometimes we meet for coffee, sometimes for drinks or food, but we always have great conversation!

OxfordShine Oxford has been up and running for over three years.  We are a small but friendly bunch run by Sam and Michelle.

We have been known to cover everything from chemotherapy to world politics (and back again) in under ten minutes. We love welcoming new people and make sure that everyone feels part of the group. Other activities include wellness days, Christmas pantos, punting trips, and more!

Drop us an email at oxford@shinecancersupport.org and we’ll let you know what’s coming up.

Meet the volunteer network leader – Michelle

Michelle finished treatment for breast cancer in 2016. At that time she had the amazing good fortune to discover the (then) newly set up Shine Oxford. Finding a younger adult support group which was also loads of fun really helped with her recovery. She is now looking forward to helping others with a cancer diagnosis by joining the lovely Sam as an Oxford Network Leader.

In her free time Michelle enjoys dragon boating, science fiction and drinking tea.

Meet the volunteer network leader – Sam

Sam joined Shine Oxford in 2017 and became a Network Leader in 2018. Sam was diagnosed with primary breast cancer in 2015 and moved away from Oxford to be closer to family during treatment. This meant that for the majority of time during treatment, and for a long time after, she didn’t have the chance to talk with younger people in the same situation as her, and felt pretty lonely.  But then along came Shine and the opportunity to meet and talk with other people who had experienced so many of the same thoughts and feelings. The chance to share with other people who immediately ‘got it’ without having to filter out words or ideas.

Sam loves to organise relaxed events for everyone where it is possible to talk as little or as much about cancer as they wish, but mostly to have fun! Meeting with other people in Shine who know what you are going through is so helpful and important to feel supported, be free to say whatever you need to say and to have a social life where having cancer doesn’t make you the odd one out!
