dorsetShine Dorset was our first network and is still going strong. Our main aim is to bring people together for a bit of fun and relaxation (not easy to come by when you’ve got cancer). We arrange coffee mornings, evening drinks, members lunches, bowling, camping trips and other days out.

Abbe now organises get togethers and are always open to suggestions for new activities. They can also arrange to meet with you before a get together if you are a bit nervous about coming along to your first meet up. We’ve folded our Shine New Forest Network into Dorset now, so if you’re in the Forest, give us a shout!

If you’d like to get in touch, drop Abbe and Rosie an email on dorset@shinecancersupport.org and say hi!

Meet the volunteer network leader – Abbe

Hi I’m Abbe. I was diagnosed with breast cancer and treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and continue to take hormone blockers to prevent recurrence.

A friend at my son’s school recommended Shine to me as I was 36 and felt very alone. My family and I attended Shine Camp, which was our first Shine event. We were totally overwhelmed by the support and for the first time in a long time we felt ‘normal’.

I decided I wanted to become more involved with Shine after I went to the Great Escape in Dorset in 2015. I gained so much from that weekend and I wanted to support others who had been through a similar situation to me. I really enjoy helping to plan the annual Shine Camp, as well as our monthly meet ups. I can honestly say that I have made the most amazing friends because of Shine.  I really hope you read this and decide to come and join us at one of our meet ups.  It’d be lovely to meet you!
