Get Support

We know that having cancer at a young age can be isolating and lonely - and we’re working to change that. We provide support and activities both online and in person.

Information and Resources

Information on topics that we know are important to young adults living with a cancer diagnosis. We also share some of our favourite organisations.

All about Shine

Shine is working to create a community of young adults with cancer. All of our work is designed to bring people closer together and ensure that they get the support the need.

  • Our vision is that every adult in the UK living with cancer in their 20s, 30s or 40s can access the help and support that they need in a way that suits their lifestyle, and that they are a part of a confident, supportive and empowered community of young adults living with cancer.
  • Our mission is to provide tailored information and peer support for anyone in their 20s, 30s or 40s diagnosed with any cancer. We do this through a range of activities including lunches and drinks evenings, beach walks, multi-day getaways, workshops, online networking, and mentoring.

Want to meet up with other younger adults facing cancer?

Our Networks are not typical support groups: we don’t meet in hospitals, there is no set agenda, and we never sit around in a circle ‘sharing’! Our Shine Networks meet up on a regular basis for drinks, dinner, beach walks, bowling and more. And as a bonus, Shine always buys the first round!

We are really grateful to all of these organisations who support Shine in a variety of ways. From funding to staff time and specialist advice, we couldn't do what we do without them!

Shine Oxford is run by Fran, Sam & Sarah.

Shine Oxford has been up and running for over two years and we are a small but friendly bunch run by Fran, Sam and Sarah.

We meet on the first Saturday of every month at different locations around Oxford – sometimes for drinks, sometimes for a bit of food, but always for great conversation.

We have been known to cover everything from chemotherapy to world politics and back again in under ten minutes. We love welcoming new people to join us and make sure that everyone feels part of the group. Other activities include wellness days, Christmas panto, punting trips, and lots of other exciting plans in the pipeline.

We look forward to meeting you!

Meet the volunteer network leaders!

Fran started off just setting up a leukaemia group in Oxford, but after attending her first national Shine event in early 2016 she realised that it doesn't matter what type of cancer anyone has had – everyone has so much in common that they can still offer each other a great deal of support. Some thirty Shine Oxford meetings later, she stands by that belief! Alongside co-leading the Oxford group, Fran works part time in fundraising communications, as well as getting involved in lots of voluntary activities – although in between these she can generally be found on the sofa with tea, Netflix and a large ginger cat. Fran is still in active cancer treatment, but Shine Oxford keeps her smiling!

Sam is a hard-working Publisher, spending too many hours of her days publishing other people’s words. She has a dream to write a best seller, become the next J K Rowling and never have to go to the office again. Until then she concentrates on enjoying Shine and meeting loads of amazing people!

Sarah set up Shine Oxford with Fran after attending the 2016 Great Escape and wanting to continue feeling the benefits of Shine once the Escape was over. A social worker by day, Sarah feels very strongly that nobody should feel isolated during difficult times. Sarah thinks Shiny friends are the best friends and enjoys attending all Shine events... even Shine Camp in the rain!
